Tell us who you are and what you do.
My name is Christina Welzer, and I am an artist based in Brooklyn, New York. My work explores the relationship between what is felt but not seen and aims to give weight and form to the intersection between solid material and light. I make drawings, sculptures and more recently have branched out into collage installations.

What project DID YOU WORK on with DIVISION?
I wanted to create a neon mask based off my line drawings. The most important part of the project was a strongly detailed laser-cut face. I came across DIVISION and sent them an email. Brandt was responsive and supportive in helping to conceptualize the project and produce the laser-cut front piece. Since the first iteration, the “Neon Demon” masks have gotten bigger and more complex, but DIVISION is always able to pull off clean linework. While I have worked with several different companies to create the neon backing for the pieces, I don’t work with anyone but DIVISION to etch the faces.

What challenges were you facing & how did division’s services help you achieve your creative vision?
The main challenge was to find someone who could accurately etch my linework. Since I hand-draw all my art, there is often a lot more detail than a machine can comfortably cut. I’ve noticed other laser-labs take shortcuts—some patches of detail are blurred or skipped over all together. But the team at DIVISION consistently captures all details precisely as they were meant to be seen. Brandt is also extremely knowledgeable and always able to transparently answer questions about materials, production, costs, and timeline. Because of this expertise and technical support—I have been able to experiment with a lot of different projects over the years.
